DIY Beard Balm Recipe with Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil & Shea Butter

This beard balm recipe combines beeswax, argan oil, jojoba oil and shea butter into a solid balm that softens, conditions and helps style your beard in one step. It's a straightforward melt-and-pour formula, ready in under an hour including freezer time.

Why This Recipe Works

Beeswax gives the balm its shape and a light, flexible hold for styling. The oils and butter handle the conditioning by softening coarse hair, sealing in moisture, and making the beard easier to comb and shape through the day.

Ingredients

Phase A

16g Beeswax Pellets

26g Argan Oil

22g Jojoba Oil

32.5g Shea Butter

Phase B

5 drops Lemon Oil

10 drops Vanilla Oil

5 drops Orange Oil

Instructions

Phase A

Combine the beeswax, argan oil and jojoba oil in a double boiler or heat-safe bowl.

Fill a pan with water and bring it to a light simmer.

Place your double boiler with the combined ingredients in the water.

Stir until completely melted, then remove from the water and add the shea butter.

Stir again until fully melted.

If any solid particles remain, return to gentle heat and stir until smooth.

Phase B

Remove the double boiler from heat once there is a uniform mixture.

Add the lemon, vanilla, and orange oils.

Stir until fully combined.

Pour while melted into a container of your choice, then place in the freezer.

Leave in the freezer for 20–30 minutes to prevent crystallisation and grittiness.

What Are the Key Ingredients in This Beard Balm?

Each ingredient nourishes and strengthens beard hair from root to tip, while helping relax coarse curls and soften the hair and skin underneath.

Argan Oil: Moisturises, adds shine, protects hair from breakage and increases elasticity.

Jojoba Oil: Promotes hair growth and thickness, repairs damage from heat and styling products and controls dandruff.

Shea Butter: Softens hair, seals in moisture and allows for easy styling.

Beeswax: Moisturises, smoothens and straightens hair and prevents itchiness.

FAQs About This Beard Balm Recipe

Q: Can I use beard balm every day?
A: Yes. A small amount worked through a clean, dry or towel-dried beard daily is the standard routine. Start with a pea-sized amount and add more if your beard is longer or coarser.

Q: What's the difference between beard balm and beard oil?
A: Beard oil is a liquid blend of oils with no hold. Beard balm, like this one, adds beeswax for light styling hold alongside the conditioning benefits of the oils and butter.

Q: Why do you freeze the balm before use?
A: Cooling it quickly prevents the beeswax from crystallising as it sets, which is what causes a gritty or grainy texture instead of a smooth one.

Q: Can I substitute the essential oils?
A: Yes. The lemon, vanilla, and orange oils are for fragrance only and don't affect the balm's hold or conditioning. Swap in any skin-safe essential oil blend you prefer.
