Easy DIY Whipped Body Butter
+ 30 min cool/whip
Indulge your skin with a cloud‑light whipped body butter that melts on contact. Shea butter delivers deep moisture, avocado oil infuses vitamins, and coconut oil leaves a silky finish. A hint of beeswax locks everything in, while your chosen essential oil adds a personal, lingering scent. Perfect for everyday pampering or gifting a jar of handmade luxury.
Ingredients:
- 50 g Shea Butter
- 25 g Avocado Oil
- 20 g Coconut Oil
- 4 g Beeswax
- 1 g Essential Oil (your signature scent)
Method:
- Gently melt shea butter, avocado oil, coconut oil, and beeswax in a double boiler.
- Remove from heat and stir in essential oil.
- Allow to cool until the mixture becomes opaque and starts to firm.
- Whip with a hand mixer until light and fluffy.
- Spoon into a clean jar and store in a cool, dry place.
Additional Information
-
Graininess happens when the mixture cools too slowly and the fatty acids in shea butter crystallise. Next time, chill the melted blend in the fridge for 10–15 minutes until it just starts to set, then whip—this quick cool prevents large crystals.
-
Yes. Mango or cocoa butter both work, but cocoa butter makes a firmer, slightly heavier product. Keep the total “butter” weight at 50 g for the same texture.
-
Beeswax adds stability and a protective barrier. You can omit it for a softer whip, or replace with candelilla wax (use half the amount) for a vegan option.
-
Increase beeswax to 6 g or store the finished jar in a cool cupboard. If it does melt, pop it in the fridge, then re‑whip once partially solid.
-
Lavender, sweet orange, and frankincense are gentle choices. Avoid phototoxic oils like cold‑pressed lemon or strong irritants like cinnamon. Keep total essential‑oil concentration at ~1 % of the batch (1 g per 100 g).
-
Absolutely—add 0.5–1 g of vitamin E oil after melting but before whipping. It boosts antioxidant power and can slightly extend shelf life.
-
With clean tools and an airtight jar, it stays fresh 9–12 months. Because it’s water‑free, no preservative is needed, but keep it away from heat and moisture.
-
It may still be too warm or too cold. Wait until the edges look opaque but the centre is soft before whipping. If it’s rock‑solid, let it sit at room temp a few minutes and whip again.
-
In small amounts, shea and avocado oils absorb well. If you prefer a lighter feel, swap half the coconut oil for a “dry” oil like grapeseed or fractionated coconut.
-
Yes use a tiny amount of lip‑safe mica or oil‑dispersion pigment. Add during the whipping stage to evenly distribute colour without streaks.
